More CHP Lane Splitting PSA Awesomeness: Radio Spots

The California Highway Patrol and the California Office of Traffic Safety continue to lead the way promoting driver awareness of lane splitting and safety for riders, launching two new radio spots with these goals in mind.

The first features Sergeant Mark Pope of the California Motorcyclist Safety Program and the CHP’s Motorcycle Safety Unit.

“Hi, I’m Sergeant Mark Pope of the California Highway Patrol. Many drivers don’t realize that lane splitting by motorcyclist is legal, if done safely. To make the roadway safer, traffic safety experts developed general guidelines for lane splitting. Drivers, please look twice for motorcyclists. Riders, slow down and give yourself time to react.

Remember, getting home safe is a shared responsibility. For more information, visit the CHP website – search ‘lane splitting’. A message from the Office of Traffic Safety and the California Highway Patrol.”

The second spot features Pope’s son and a friend, in an effort to humanize motorcyclists as something other than the stereotypical Sons of Anarchy “bikers”.

“Hi, I’m Connor Pope – and I’m Nick Schaffer. Sometimes I get to ride on the back of my dad’s motorcycle – it’s awesome! My dad says, many drivers don’t realize that motorcycles can lane split – and that scares us! Even I know lane splitting is legal if done safely. Do us a favor, look twice for motorcycles – the life you save might be mine!

Remember, getting home safe is a shared responsibility. For guidelines, visit the CHP website and search ‘lane splitting’. A message from the Office of Traffic Safety and the California Highway Patrol.”

Awesome stuff. Another big high five from us here at LaneSplittingIsLegal.com to the folks at OTS and the CHP – thanks for working to keep riders safe!
